Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap)
Medicare Supplement Insurance, also known as Medigap, is coverage offered by private insurance companies to help pay for out-of-pocket costs not covered by Original Medicare. This includes copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles that you would otherwise be responsible for paying.
Medicare Supplement Insurance plans are standardized and must provide a core set of benefits, though some plans offer additional coverage. For example, certain Medicare Supplement Insurance plans may help cover emergency medical care if you become ill while traveling outside the United States.
Am I Eligible for a Medicare Supplement Insurance Plan?
To qualify for a Medigap policy, you must:
- Be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B
- Pay a monthly premium for your Medigap plan (in addition to your Part B premium)
- Understand that each policy covers one person, so spouses need separate plans
- Not be enrolled in a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan—unless you switch back to Original Medicare (Parts A and B)
The best time to purchase a Medigap policy is when you turn 65 (or older) and first enroll in Medicare Part A and Part B, as this period offers the most flexibility and guaranteed access to coverage.
